Lyrics, music, and performance by Emma NPR Tiny Desk Contest 2026 Video file: L1020076 Note: I wrote the song in 2002, but it's taken on new meaning as a feminist later in life. The personal is political, even if you didn't realize it at the time. "Normal Girl" Lyrics: I wish I didn’t care what people thought of me because I’m constantly insecure. I am insecure because I’ve had a fucked-up life but I like to keep the front I’m a normal girl. It’s hard to trust your intuition when You’re afraid/ you’ll reveal too much. I apologize for holding up this shield I’m just afraid/ you’ll see too much. I wish I didn’t care what people thought of me because I’m constantly insecure. I am insecure because I’ve had a fucked-up life but I like to keep the front I’m a normal girl. normal girl normal girl normal girl normal girl normal girl normal girl normal girl normal girl
