Thanks to everyone who attended Squirrel: The Movie directed by Thalia Drori!

We had a great discussion about reframing the dialog concerning violence in our society as well as how we've become inured to the over-representation of the male gaze in film. Here I am introducing the movie dressed in character (a.k.a. wearing my own clothes).

THE MOVIE

"Squirrel is a 30-minute dark comedy with Mary Vivian Pierce, one of John Waters' Dreamlanders, as the school principal. The story: When 11-year-old Noah witnesses Officer Davis pepper spraying a baby squirrel, his mom, seeing how upset he is, promises to take action. Director Thalia Drori is a writer, producer, and director from Oakland, CA. Our presenter, Emma C. Johnson, is a writer, artist, musician, and actor. Johnson met Drori, a faculty member at Minneapolis College of Art and Design at the time, where Johnson earned her B.F.A. Johnson plays Frances, friend and co-worker of the protagonist. Admission by donation."

Toxic Energy: Little Miss Potentiality Returns (Redux)

I play a lab technician. I wear a white lab coat and hold a clipboard while consulting with a scientist in the foreground. Then after recording observations about the naked people dancing tripping on acid, I confer with the scientist about what I observed in the middleground.  (55:52, 58:07) The scene was recorded in 2001.

Memories & Projections Suggesting the Present shows a still image of shoes lying on a rug just inside the entryway of a house. If you enter apartments or houses, usually shoes upon shoes for all occasions are piled up by each resident. Using eleven layers of video, one layer pictures shoes as a snapshot of a moment in time. That is, one image stays constant for the whole film.

In late 2004, I starred as Kid #3 in the third and final episode of "Buddy Lee Guidance Counselor" on MTV2's show "Control Freak." I played a band geek seeking career advice from a plastic Buddy Lee doll. It aired every weekday for two weeks during prime time. There are four videos that I'm in total—the episode plus three taped endings. Normally "Control Freak" viewers were given the choice of three music videos throughout the hour and would vote online—the video that received the most votes was played. When they aired the three episodes of "Buddy Lee" viewers of the show voted online for the ending they wanted to see. For the record, on the first night they played a music video by Jimmy Eat World to give viewers a chance to vote and "Stunt Doll" was the ending that was played. The whole third episode and alternate endings runs about six minutes. (Note: unfortunately the media player only works on a PC.)
