Barbie® imagery is hard to execute successfully because it is so iconic with its many connotations and associations; but when you get it right it’s like high point-value letters in Scrabble®!

In the Pregnant Fantasy series I am interested in feminist theorist Judith Butler’s theory that although gender pre-exists, mostly it is something that is acted out or performed. This series is meant to be viewed with my correlating film Knitting. These photographs represent the fleeting thoughts of the protagonist in the film while she knits. Feminism has come a long way, but in contemporary times the problems are beneath the surface and more subtle. We’re so programmed to think a certain way that things go unnoticed.
